HIV prevalence among men who have Vietnamese sex with men (MSM) may be higher than 10% in Vietnam's two largest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The purpose of this research was to investigate sexual relationship patterns and experiences among MSM in Hanoi in order to inform HIV prevention initiatives. We used purposive sampling to recruit 17 MSM for in-depth interviews in Hanoi, Vietnam. Participants ranged in age from 19 to 48 years old and hailed from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. The interviews were tape-recorded, verbatim transcribed, and translated into English. We used content analysis.

 

Almost all of the guys in the research perceived same-sex attraction as a "nature" trait. Many informants had covert yet prosperous social lives in Hanoi's MSM social circles. Poor males, on the other hand, had difficulty connecting to these networks. The number of sexual partners during a lifetime ranged from one to 200. Seven of the participants had been in relationships ranging in length from one to four years. Relationships were not primarily focused on love feelings for multiple men, but were instead inextricably linked to economic and practical dependency. In terms of emotional attachment, commitment, trust, relationship ideals, sexual satisfaction, and the exchange of money or gifts, sexual partnerships differed widely. Faithfulness was highly appreciated yet widely regarded as elusive. Several informants reported feeling tremendous familial pressure to marry and have children.

 

This study contextualizes sexual relationships among MSM in Hanoi and emphasizes the importance of HIV prevention actions that include not only HIV prevention in the context of casual sexual encounters, but also how to effectively target preventative measures that can reach MSM in partnerships.
